REQUIREMENTS The following requirements apply to both paid and volunteer patrollers: ?Please get the application in to us as soon as possible. We have a limited number of positions available each season.
-EMT/OEC Do you have an EMT? If yes, then this will satisfy our first aid requirements for a paid position. Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) bridge courses will be made available to paid staff members interested in attaining this level of certification and joining the National Ski Patrol.
Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) is basically a patrol-oriented, outdoor-recreation, EMT-Level certification, and is also an accepted level of first aid certification for patrolling at Mt. High. If you have no first aid background or a valid EMT, you are welcome to attend our summer OEC class or any of the numerous OEC classes offered in the fall. The OEC course takes several weeks to complete, it meets from 1-2 times per week, and certification hinges upon passing the final written and practical (hands-on) tests.
-NATIONAL SKI PATROL For all new applicants of the paid and volunteer staff, NSP membership is automatic once you are bridged or complete a full OEC class. Volunteer patrollers are required to be members of the NSP, and membership is encouraged for paid staff members. Note that there are yearly fees associated with joining the NSP and attaining an OEC certification. Fee Structures are still being finalized, but you can expect them to be under $80.00 per year. If you are taking the full OEC class, there is an additional registration cost of $35.00 and the cost of the OEC manual, approx $35.00. This is significantly less expensive than an EMT course, which can run in excess of $350.00
-CANDIDATE/ROOKIE TRAINING You will be a candidate patroller once the season starts, and will be required to demonstrate your proficiency as a skier or boarder. In addition, you will be trained and tested in several disciplines during the first several weeks of your candidate season including: mountain protocol; radio protocol; trail names, chair lift evacuation, rescue equipment locations, first aid room protocols, toboggan handling, hill safety, and on the hill rescue and first aid skills
Once you have successfully completed our ski patrol training, you will be considered a patroller and wear a Mt. High Patrol Jacket with a cross. For a member of the paid staff this will result in a pay increase, and for the volunteer staff this will mean you can enjoy many of the benefits described above.
